Many companies in the municipality handle hazardous substances in their production processes and are therefore subject to comprehensive safety regulations. If there is an accident, these substances can be harmful to you and to nature. It is important that you read this information so that you know what to do in the event of an accident.
How you are informed that an accident has happened
There are a number of different ways that you can find out that there has been a serious accident involving hazardous substances. One way is via the outdoor signal “Important message”. Another way is information or warning messages broadcast on the TV or radio. You may also recieve information via a text message to your mobile phone.
What to do when you hear the signal
The outdoor signal “Important message” consists of 7-second signals with a 14-second pause in between. The signal is repeated for at least two minutes.
When you hear the signal, this is what you do:
- Go indoors.
- Close doors, windows and ventilation.
- Listen to the radio and TV.The outdoor signal “Important message” is tested once a quarter.
This takes place at 15:00 on the first Monday that is not a public holiday in the months of March, June, September and December.
If you find yourself in smoke or a gas cloud…
Smoke and gas can have an extremely stinging odour that can cause a burning sensation in the eyes and nose as well as causing irritation in the throat and coughing.
- Consider the wind direction! Move away from the accident.
- Move against the wind direction.
- You can make a temporary “respirator” by breathing through a damp cloth.
